ABSTRACT

This study is an investigation into the factors that influence the growth of cultism in tertiary institution. A case study of college of Education, Ekiadolor, Benin. The main objective was to  (i) Investigate the factors responsible for cultism (ii)  To examine the effect of cultism in Institution of higher learning (iii) To provide information on role of parent in the control of cultism  (iv) To ascertain the role of lecturers in the control of cultism, (v) To ascertain the role of school management in the control of cultism (vi) To determine how cultism can be minimized. The researcher chose to use questionnaire as the main instrument for the collection of data needed for the study that was restructured by the supervisor to actually suit the purpose. The population of the study remain the entire student, academic and non-academic staff of College of Education, Ekiadolor, Benin. Because of size of the population, the sample of 150 respondents were randomly chosen in which 77 respondent were male and 73 respondents were female. The result revealed the trend of cultism in Nigeria institutions of higher  learning are as follows it turns these once-reverted institutions into derogatory ones. This work examine the concept and issues of cultism, categories of cult, the structure and perceived philosophy of cults, strategies to draw new recruits into cults, as well as the activities of cultism in tertiary institution. However from the analysis of data made in this study, the following findings have been revealed. (i).Parents should monitor the activities of children both in and outside the school. They should know the kind of friends they keep and monitor them regularly.

(ii). Churches and Mosques should establish strong youth department that would give opportunity to vent out issue (iii). School Management should carry out regular check on the student on possession of arms in the campus as a result of this finding, the following recommendation were put forward. (i) Cultism among student in tertiary institution in Nigeria can be minimized by introducing programmes in the television, radio and other awareness programmes such as workshops and seminar designed to enlightened the students on the implication and  danger of joining secret  cult. (ii) Guardian and counselors should be posted to every tertiary institution in Nigeria with the duty of counseling the students and staff only. (iii) The institution administrator should maintain adequate inspection, supervision and monitoring the staff and student on cultism.
